Hollywood Fashion: For Better or Worse

Image
It’s hard to imagine someone as pretty and vivacious as Katherine Heigl as “always the bridesmaid, never the bride,” but that’s the premise of the romantic comedy 27 Dresses. The title alone conjures up the hideous and boring wedding styles brides impose for their extravagant ceremonies.

Hollywood has given us many memorable wedding-fashion moments over the years. Some for better, others for worse:

A Philadelphia Story
Adrian’s costume design for this classic film remains talked about to this day. Dressing one of the most sophisticated women of cinema may not be all that difficult, except that she perhaps overshadows her dress. (Adrian also designed the gowns for The Bride Wore Red, Double Wedding, and I Take This Woman.)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding
More like my big fat Greek wedding-dress. The movie came out in 2002, not the 80s, so why does every single woman in the movie wear such a huge, frilly frock? Because they’re Greek, that’s why. If it’s tacky and it’s got sequins, a Greek will wear it. (I should know.)

The Wedding Singer
Speaking of the 80s… there’s so, so much outdated fashion in The Wedding Singer. The Michael Jackson-inspired red leather jacket. The white blazer straight out of Miami Vice. Yet, when it comes to the wedding dress itself, it’s a sweet short-sleeved gown made all the more charming with a large, dark necklace.

So I Married an Axe Murderer
Jumping from one SNL alum (Adam Sandler) to another (Mike Meyers), we see how heritage can really add to the character of a wedding. Rare as it is, the groom and the groomsmen steal attention away from the bride with their traditional Scottish kilts.

Monsoon Wedding
A stunningly beautiful example of cultural fashion at a wedding is Monsoon Wedding. The reds, pinks, oranges, and yellows overwhelm the senses. While the white used in American weddings symbolizes purity, the bright, warm hues in Indian weddings seems to indicate the passion and celebration of the ceremony. (Bend It Like Beckham also featured a beautiful Indian wedding.)

How to Deal
Mandy Moore’s cute crop is great throughout this movie, and you can find out how to do your makeup just like hers at Makeup411 (http://www.makeup411.com/beauty_breakdown/BB_MandyMoore.htm ). Her pastel purple bridesmaid dress is less than exciting, but her boyfriend’s pairing of a hat with a tuxedo makes a bold statement.

Even if you don’t have a Hollywood-sized budget, you can still have a wedding worthy of a fashion spread.

Taking cues from our tutorials section, brides could transform their old prom shoes into something with a bit more sparkle (http://www.emergingthoughts.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=103&Itemid=53 ). The tutorial shows a gold shoe, which would work for a glamorous wedding, as would silver, but imagine how fun it would be to spray them a metallic blue for your something blue.

If your bridesmaids are wearing their hair in a chignon, earrings are essential. The DIY Sequin Earrings (http://www.emergingthoughts.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=143&Itemid=53 ) shown in the tutorials can be adjusted to any color and any length.

Style Me Pretty (http://www.stylemepretty.com/howtos/index.html) recently had a contest for the best crafting ideas for a wedding. In terms of fashion, they show romantic hairpins (http://www.stylemepretty.com/2007/12/diy-entries-4.html ) for the ladies and quirkily fun origami boutonnieres (http://www.stylemepretty.com/2007/12/do-it-yoursel-2.html ) for the guys.

Snippet & Ink’s (http://snippetandink.blogspot.com ) Kathryn Storke suggests that brides should look beyond chain bridal stores for more unique fashion statements. She says, “I love incorporating non-wedding fashion into wedding boards. Why should your bridesmaids have to wear a dress that screams ‘Hi, I'm a bridesmaid!’ And as good as a tux can look, why should the groom and groomsmen have no choices beyond vest color? I especially love the idea of letting your attendants wear things they'll be able to wear again.”

She customized the pictured inspiration board to reflect the independent spirit of Emerging Thoughts and said our DIY readers planning weddings should “incorporate the creative talents of not only the couple, but also of important people in their life.”

Your turn… Got any DIY tips that are Hollywood worthy?
